Mission: UMOJA of Africa Foundation is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering immigrant and refugee families in Colorado to thrive, achieve self-sufficiency, and build strong futures. Our mission is to create pathways for children, youth, and families to succeed through culturally responsive education, mentoring, leadership development, and social support services that strengthen both individual potential and community resilience.
We believe that those most impacted by injustice—immigrants, refugees, youth of color, and low-income families—hold the knowledge and vision for their own liberation. Guided by this belief, we center their voices in shaping our programs and leadership. Our initiatives include youth tutoring and mentoring, early STEM and computer coding education, cultural preservation and bereavement support, leadership development, and employment readiness. Together, these programs not only address immediate needs but also challenge systemic barriers to equity by equipping families with tools to break cycles of poverty, discrimination, and marginalization.
UMOJA means “unity” in Swahili, and unity is at the heart of our work. We create safe, welcoming spaces where immigrant and refugee families connect, heal, and build collective power. By fostering collaboration across generations and cultures, we strengthen our entire community and work toward a Colorado where all people, regardless of background, can participate fully and equally. Our mission is rooted in justice, resilience, and the belief that when immigrant families rise, entire communities rise with them.
