This country’s long term care system is over a half century old, and is based on a medical model. Over the years with hundreds of ADAPT activists endless effort, billions of dollars have been allocated for transitioning people out of nursing homes and accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities. ADAPT has succeeded in getting legislation introduced several times. But across the country, people with disabilities are still being forced into institutions without a choice of where to live and receive services.
Now with 42 chapters nationwide, ADAPT has made community supports for people with disabilities its major issue, and continues to organize disability rights activist to engage in nonviolent direct action, including civil disobedience, to assure the civil and human rights of people with disabilities.
